OK, so this is the beginning of my “Around the World Tour” month. This week I'll have 5 matches involving at least one Mexican wrestler, the more competitors in the match, the more wrestlers of that Nationality they must have. My first match is coming from the debut of the Lucha Underground television show.
Also just a quick note, it is Nationality, not heritage. So although Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio are amazing Latino wrestlers, they will not feature as Mexican due to being born in America. I'm also going to try as little “double dipping” competitors in each week as I can to get some variety in.
This match first aired on Lucha Underground's debut show (29th October 2014) and was Lucha Underground's first intergender match, a variation that Lucha Libre has a successful record with. Matt Striker and Lucha legend Vampiro handle commentary for this season.
Son of Havoc (the former Matt Cross) got the jobber entrance, being in the ring as we get back to the ring. Sexy Star gets a decent pop as she enters for her match. We also get a video package showcasing her as a strong woman in Lucha Underground. Son of Havoc refuses to wrestle a woman but doesn't want to lose so he tells Sexy Star to get herself counted out. The match must have started because I didn't hear the bell, but Star climbs out of the ring. The referee starts the count, but when Son of Havoc turns his back Sexy Star attacks! She batters him into the corner and unloads with strikes. Son of Havoc powers her down to the mat, but Sexy Star is back on her feet and she attacks again. Son of Havoc shoves her down then charges at her with a shoulder block. Son of Havoc looks to follow up with an Asai moonsault but Star rolls out of the way and gets back to her feet. Sexy Star gets a headscissors and attempts a wheelbarrow move but Havoc sends her back down to the mat. Havoc throws Sexy Star into the corner, he sends Star across the ring but she catches herself on the ropes, she lands on Son of Havoc's shoulder though and he wants a running powerslam. Star escapes out the back and shoves Son of Havoc into the corner. Havoc tries to throw Star out of the ring but she lands on the apron. Hard slap by Sexy Star sends Son of Havoc reeling and she climbs to the top rope. A flying cross body gets Sexy Star a nearfall. She tries to keep her momentum going, but Havoc catches her and hits a back suplex backbreaker for the win.
I was a bit deflated with that finish, to be honest. All the hype Sexy Star had on commentary about being as good as the guys, then is caught with one move and pinned cleanly. She got some of her stuff in and was able to look good, but I think Lucha Underground dropped the ball with not having her win. If you're going to cast her as the underdog then do that, if you're going to use her as an example of women being as good as men then do that, but decide which you're doing before hand. 4.3/10
