MATCH 2: THE ASCENSION VS. EL LOCALO & KALISTO (NXT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS)
The Ascension don't wait for the bell, and they beat down on El Locale and Kalisto. Irish whip by The Ascension turned into stereo headscissors takedowns by the Luchadores. The Ascension take a break out of the ring and hype themselves up. It clearly works as they meet the Luchadores off a pair of dives with a pair of stereo uppercuts. Viktor starts off against Kalisto, and he chokes the former Samurai del Sol, before booting him. Viktor sends Kalisto into the corner and tags out to Konnor as we get a replay of the uppercuts earlier. The Ascension keep hold of an irish whip and Kalisto gets tied up and clotheslines himself down. Konnor hits a jumping elbow drop and that gets the champions a nearfall. Konnor brings Kalisto to his feet and holds him in the air like a tiger suplex, Viktor gets a blind tag and hits a double chop to Kalisto's chest. Konnor drops Kalisto to the floor and gets on the apron. Viktor pulls back on Kalisto's mask, but he stops before he's disqualified. Viktor brings Kalisto up to his feet and sends him down again with a hard chop, getting another nearfall.
At NXT: Arrival The Ascension faced Too Cool and recently they also faced the Usos. So The Ascension have a pretty good tag team repertoire to their name. Kalisto tries to fight back as he gets to his feet but Viktor puts a stop to it and perches him in the corner before tagging out to Konnor. Kalisto is in the tree of woe and Konnor hits a series of hard boots to the chest before tagging back out. William Regal says all great tag teams use their half of the ring but The Ascension use their quarter of the ring. That's smart competing. Victor hits a Final Cut out of the corner and covers Kalisto, but Kalisto kicks out at 2. Kalisto turns for his corner, but before he can crawl to his partner Viktor grabs him and gets a chinlock, Viktor rolls himself and Kalisto over, so his body weight is on Kalisto also. We get a replay of Viktor taking Kalisto out of his boots in the corner, as the fans get behind Kalisto. Phillips mentions that Kalisto is facing his corner, Viktor taunting him that he can't make a tag. Kalisto gets to his feet and elbows out, but Viktor sends him out of the ring. Konnor gets the tag and goes down to bring Kalisto to his feet. Konnor sends Kalisto into the ropes and Kalisto bounces back to the floor, barely missing the guardrail. Konnor goes to do it again but Kalisto catches himself and boots Konnor away. Kalisto catches Viktor with his legs and slams him face first into the apron.
Kalisto sees this as his chance and gets back in the ring. He just can't get the energy to crawl very far. Konnor has got his bearings back and he slides back in the ring, he picks Kalisto up and carries him back to The Ascension's corner. Viktor makes another quick tag and hits Kalisto with a hard chop. Kalisto backs himself to the corner, and Viktor goes on the attack but he's met with the back elbow. Kalisto jumps to the second rope and hits a flip knee-catch headscissors? That's what I'll call it. It's enough for him to get the hot tag to El Locale, he knocks Viktor down with a clothesline and hits Konnor on the apron. Running back elbow sends Viktor down again, El Locale ducks a clothesline and hits another back elbow before hitting a sloppy springboard crossbody off the second rope. Viktor reverses a clothesline into the corner, but El Locale stops himself. Rolling kick by El Locale reels Viktor and El Locale hits another moonsault off the second rope! 1, 2, no! Konnor saves the titles.
Kalisto gets in the ring to even things up, although his partner climbs out to the top rope, so not really. Anyway, Kalisto rolls Konnor up but neither of them is legal so he kicks him in the head from the ground instead. Just the legal men in the ring as Viktor catches El Locale on the top rope, but El Locale clears him!Viktor hits the running STO though! Viktor tags out to Konnor and Fall of Man means El Locale Falls to Konnor.
WINNERS: THE ASCENSION
This was a match, on a wrestling show, that extended The Ascension's reign as NXT Tag Team Champions. That's all that really can be said for it. Whereas Arrival had the spectacle of an old tag team coming back to answer an open challenge, this just felt like a match that should have been on the WWF 1980's weekly shows. Kalisto can do a lot better, and the fans were actually into the Lucha side, you just didn't believe they had much chance of a victory. I'll rate it 4.3/10
