Earlier in the Night, the Stud Stable had an interview with Gene Okerlund backstage. At that point, Col. Robert Parker was confident he could still get Meng in this match and save himself from entering. It appears that isn’t so. After the WCW Tag Team Championship match, The Rhodes Family and Nasty Boys get some promo time, and they’re all dressed like the Nastys for tonight’s match. Dusty Rhodes goes through all types of Games, such as the Olympics, before saying that we haven’t seen anything yet, as only Dusty can.
So here is the lineup for the match:
The Stud Stable: Terry Funk, Buckhouse Buck, Arn Anderson, and Colonel Robert Parker
Nasty Rhodes: Dusty & Dustin Rhodes, Brian Knobbs, and Jerry Sags.
We start from the entrances. The Stud Stable make their way out, with Meng in their corner. It’s interesting seeing Meng in a suit and sunglasses during this era. The Nasty Boys and Rhodes Family make their way out. The name plates aren’t timed properly for the camera but we see each member. Each team goes to their door.
Tony Schiavone and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan are on commentary for this match. Michael Buffer is our ring announcer.
THE STUD STABLE VS. THE RHODES FAMILY & NASTY BOYS
(War Games)
WCW Fall Brawl 1994 (18th September 1994)
Dustin Rhodes and Arn Anderson start us off with a brawl. Arn Anderson cuts Rhodes off with a knee to the midsection, and he sends Dustin into the cage wall immediately.
Dustin Rhodes knocks Anderson down with a right hand, sending him scurrying into the other ring. Dustin climbs the turnbuckles and steps over a cameraman from one ring to the other, coming off the top with a strike. Dustin spends some time asking which wall he should send Anderson into, but Arn Anderson is able to get his arms up. This ain’t his first rodeo; in fact, Anderson has been in 15 War Games matches previously to this one (including the house shows). Dustin Rhodes is entering his 4th War Games. Arn Anderson backs into the other ring again, closer to his teammates. Dustin is happy to follow, but he gets caught with a kick to the midsection. Arn Anderson brings Dustin Rhodes to the ropes and steps out to the apron, but gets his hands up so he doesn’t hit the cage again. Dustin slams Arn’s back into the cage wall. He rakes at Anderson’s back like a real babyface. Dustin Rhodes sends Arn Anderson across the ring into an inverted atomic drop, and a running boot sends Anderson over to the aprons between the rings. Col. Parker is shouting from ringside as Anderson has his head dropped between the rings. Arn Anderson fights back to his feet in the confined space, but he gets backdropped into the ring closest to Dusty and the Nasties. Dustin Rhodes runs the ropes in the other ring to get momentum for a jumping clothesline on Anderson, clearing the gap between the rings.
Dustin Rhodes lifts himself using the ceiling to kick Anderson down with both feet and sends him into the corner. Arn Anderson staggers out into a Bionic Elbow. Rhodes knocks Anderson down with right hands as Terry Funk is telling Nick Patrick that he wants to get in the match. Dustin with a low stomp on Anderson, now Bunkhouse Buck is saying he wants in. Robert Parker doesn’t seem too eager, but he must be thinking strategically. Dustin Rhodes knocks Anderson down with a clothesline and an elbow drop. He snapmares Arn down and stomps on his arm as we hear that we have 2 minutes remaining before someone new enters the match. Dustin Rhodes sends Arn Anderson off the ropes, but he ducks too early and gets caught with a DDT. Arn punches Dustin on the mat and sends him off the ropes into a clothesline. Dustin Rhodes with a great sell. Terry Funk cheers Arn Anderson on as Dustin fights back with right hands and sends Anderson off the ropes into a dropkick. Arn Anderson escapes to the ring close to the Stud Stable, Dustin Rhodes ducks an enziguri and locks in a submission hold as we go to the coin toss.
The Stud Stable call heads and wouldn’t you know it? The heels get the one-man advantage. Bunkhouse Buck enters the match and goes to town on Dustin Rhodes with right hands. Dustin will be fighting 2 on 1 for 2 minutes before he can get assistance. Bunkhouse Buck sends Dustin off the ropes into a big boot and backs into the ropes for momentum on the fist drop. Buck stomps on Rhodes as Schiavone confirms for Heenan that there are only 2 minutes in this portion of the match. Anderson and Buck send Dustin off the ropes into a double back elbow before sending him into the cage. Arn Anderson holds Dustin’s arm down for Buck to stomp on as we get halfway through the time period. Jerry Sags decides he wants to go in next, Bunkhouse Buck and Arn Anderson each grab a leg for a boston crab before Jerry Sags makes his way in to what must be the biggest pop of his career. He knocks both members of the Stud Stable down. Anderson gets a right hand when he gets back to his feet. Buck is knocked back into the ropes with a forearm shot. Jerry Sags hits bodyslams Arn Anderson before lifting Buck and running him into the cage wall. Anderson also hits the cage wall, and Sags drops Bunkhouse Buck with a piledriver as Dustin Rhodes knocks Arn Anderson back into the corner.
Dustin Rhodes mounts the corner for some punches on Anderson, which is complete with a bionic elbow as Jerry Sags headbutts Buck low. Sags beats down Buck in the corner as Dustin sends Anderson off the ropes into a Sleeper Hold. Bunkhouse Buck runs into a clothesline from Sags. Bunkhouse Buck is lifted into the ceiling in a choke as Dustin drops a knee on Anderson. Dusty is telling his son to be careful, as in 15 seconds, The Funker will be entering. Funk tries to throw a chair into the cage, forgetting there's a roof, in his anticipation, before putting his boot over his hand. Funk tries to hit Dustin Rhodes, with the momentum sending him over both sets of ropes. Bunkhouse Buck catches Sags with a right hand as Funk gets to his feet. Terry Funk knocks Dustin down as Arn and Buck send Sags into the cage, and he falls down before they can hit him with a back elbow. Funk sends Rhodes into the cage as The Brain mentions the Funk and Rhodes family rivalry. Dustin’s face is sent into the cage multiple times right in front of Dusty as Anderson and Bunkhouse Buck continue to double-team Jerry Sags.
The fans chant “We want Flair” as Funk stomps on Dustin from the top rope, using the cage to steady himself. Scratch that, Dustin crotches Funker on the top rope as Col. Robert Parker looks on, worried. Jerry Sags hits a piledriver on Terry Funk, sending him to the floor between the rings as Brian Knobbs is ready to even the numbers. All three members of The Stud Stable meet Brian Knobbs, but the fresh man sends them all into the cage. Both Nasty Boys send Arn Anderson into the cage, and Brian Knobbs grinds his face against it. Dustin Rhodes separates Bunkhouse Buck in the other ring as Sags sends Funk’s head into the side of the cage as the fans count along. Brian Knobbs knocks Funk down with his own boot as the Nasties stand tall. Terry Funk swings wildly at the air and stumbles between the rings. Dustin Rhodes grinds Buck’s face against the cage in front of Meng before Funk cuts him off. Jerry Sags has Funk’s boot now and returns it to Funk, with two hard shots to the cranium. Buck is knocked down with Funk’s boot courtesy of Sags, but Arn Anderson cuts him off as he switches rings. Dustin Rhodes with a Noggin Knocker on Funk and Buck as Knobbs has the boot behind Anderson. If you couldn’t tell, this is hard to follow. Colonel Robert Parker starts to panic as he’s the last one in the ring. Dustin has used Funk’s boot, but the Stud Stable have the advantage as Parker stalls. Tony Schiavone says they’re not starting the final 2-minute section until he gets in the ring, but I’m not sure that’s official.
Bunkhouse Buck holds Dustin Rhodes so Parker can get some free shots, Colonel Robert Parker hurt his hand hitting Dustin Rhodes. Terry Funk is whipping at Dustin with a belt as Dusty Rhodes and Meng look on. Arn Anderson hits a spinebuster on Brian Knobbs. Col Parker has a belt, and Bunkhouse Buck holds Sags for some shots to the chest. Dustin has the bel,t and he goes after all 4 members of the Stud Stable. We get a countdown from 10 seconds before Buck, Funk and Anderson all meet Dusty by the door. He fights them all off with Bionic Elbows because this is Dusty Rhodes in the War Games. Dusty sends the three wrestlers into the cage, Robert Parker escapes that ring but ends up alone with the Nasty Boys and Dustin. The Nasties send Parker into the cage as Meng tries to find a way in. Both doors were locked during Dusty’s hot tag. Jerry Sags sends Parker across the ring into the turnbuckles, Brian Knobbs hits a jimping splash in the corner, and that sets up a Figure Four leglock from Dusty Rhodes. The Nasty Boys fight off the Stud Stable whilst running back for elbow drops until Colonel Robert Parker surrenders for his team.
WINNERS: The Nasty Rhodes
This match was good, but for a War Games that’s barely over disappointing. Arn Anderson and Dustin Rhodes starting the match made sense, but halfway through the match you knew which order they were going into the match so that anticipation was taken from us. Colonel Robert Parker was obviously taking the fall but there was no reason it had to be Dusty. The match just seemed to plod along in low gear, but War Games is always going to be pretty good. [***] 5.5/10
After the match, The Rhodes Family and Nasty Boys leave the cage as Meng makes his way in, headbutting Jackie Crockett’s camera before checking on Col. Robert Parker.
