JAKE ROBERTS VS. GEORGE WELLS

Before the match, Gene Okerlund talks to Big John Studd and Bill Fralic, the Offensive Lineman for the Atlanta Falcons at this time. This was to hype up the Battle Royal match in Rosement, IL.

The future Mr. McMahon asks Susan if she likes snakes which is not good in 2024 as George Wells makes his way to the ring. Jake Roberts gets a televised entrance and he’s only 2 weeks into his WWF career at this point.

Vince McMahon & Susan Saint James are on commentary for this match. Howard Finkel is our ring announcer

JAKE ROBERTS VS. GEORGE WELLS

WWF WrestleMania II (7th April 1986)

Jake Roberts puts the bag in the corner and the bell rings as he approaches Wells, slapping him. The journeyman only eats one shot before firing back with right hands.

George Wells sends Roberts off the ropes into a backdrop. George Wells connects with more right hands, Jake Roberts swings wildly and connects with a weak boot to the gut, followed by a right hand to the ribs before sending Wells to the arena floor. No mats here, maybe they were on Hulk Hogans loop. George Wells connects with a right hand and they get back in the ring, as there is no room on the floor. Jake Roberts connects with a right first and grabs a headlock. Roberts is shoved across the ring, Jake leapfrogs another body drop attempt but turns around into a jumping shoulder block from Wells. McMahon mentions that Wells was in the Canadian Football League so I can mention Jim Ross in this 3-minute match.

George Wells stomps on Jake Roberts and knocks him down with a headbutt. Great sell from Roberts. George Wells sends Roberts into the corner, then across the ring into the opposite turnbuckles. Roberts stumbles out into a headscissors and calls for a time out. Even Susan Saint James isn’t having that! George Wells plants Jake with a slam as McMahon says he’s been bulking up gaining 20-30lbs over the last few months. George Wells hits a knee lift whilst I ponder whether it’s overselling from McMahon. I decide it should be considered so and see Roberts get sent off the ropes into a powerslam for 2.

Jake Roberts turns the tide, connecting with a shot that grazed Wells in the eye and slithering out of the ring. Thanks McMahon. George Wells follows and Roberts gets back in the ring, Jake connects with a knee lift as Wells is getting through the ropes and hits the DDT for the win.

WINNER: JAKE ROBERTS

This isn’t your typical WrestleMania match, by modern standards. It was an exhibition for a new star to get a PPV match, promoting him for the house shows.  [STARS] /10

After the match, Jake Roberts puts the snake over George Wells and it gets pretty close to his neck.
