PAUL ROMA VS. ALEX WRIGHT

Before the match, Tony Schiavone welcomes us to SuperBrawl, he is on the stage by commentary with Gene Okerlund and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. They hype up the main event between Vader and Hulk Hogan. Mean Gene will also have an interview with Ric Flair later in the night. We cut to a video of Vader arriving in a limousine, Heenan thinks he saw Flair in the same car. Vader threatens the cameraman and I can’t blame him, screw having someone watching you arrive at work. A second limo shows up and Vader thinks it’s got Hulk Hogan inside so he grabs the driver, shouting at him. Vader interrupts the Main Event broadcast to attack Stars and Stripes, Romeo Valentino and Dino Casanova.

Paul Roma makes his way out first, this match was booked because Roma was jealous of the amount of female attention Das Wunderkind was getting. Seriously. Alex Wright slaps hands on his way down to the ring

Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and Tony Schiavone are on commentary for this match.

PAUL ROMA VS. ALEX WRIGHT

WCW SuperBrawl V (19th February 1995)

Paul Roma doesn’t like Wright’s flashy entrance, jumping him from behind. Alex Wright is able to remove his jacket before Roma knocks him back into the corner.

Paul Roma knocks Das Wunderkind down and hits an elbow drop to the leg. Paul Roma struggles to lift Alex Wright overhead and slams him down, Alex Wright connects with right hands but Roma no-sells it, knocking Wright down again. Paul Roma scrapes his knee across Alex Wright’s face and sends Wright across the ring. Paul Roma ducks early and is caught with a sunset flip for 2. Alex Wright takes Roma down with arm drags, but Paul Roma gets back to his feet and counters the pressure with an arm wrench of his own. Alex Wright rolls through and cartwheels out, but Paul Roma wastes zero motion getting the momentum back. Paul Roma uses Alex Wright’s hair to take him down and the referee gives him a slap on the wrist. Alex Wright kips up and climbs up the ropes before escaping with an arm drag, getting a 2 count from a hip toss. Paul Roma is kept on the mat with a top wristlock, Paul Orndorf makes his way out as Paul Roma tries to slam Wright. Alex Wright is able to keep the hold on. Alex Wright hits a leg drop as I watch the match on the video screen behind Orndorf. Alex Wright keeps Roma on the mat, controlling the left arm. Paul Roma works to his feet but a fireman’s carry takes him back down.

Paul Roma counters with a headscissors and gets back to his feet. Paul Roma hits Wright from behind with a forearm shot and jumping elbow drops. Paul Roma takes the straps down and lifts Alex Wright for a series of backbreakers before throwing him away. Paul Roma stomps on Wright before dumping him from the ring. Orndorf just stands back as Paul Roma celebrates in the ring. Alex Wright is caught with a club to the back of the head and another to the chest, dropping Alex Wright on the apron before shoving him back to the floor. Alex Wright gets back to the apron and fights back with right hands, he slingshots into the ring but is caught with a right hand from Paul Roma. Roma covers but only gets 2, absorbing forearm shots from Wright before whipping him across the ring. Alex Wright blocks the hip toss and brings Roma down for a backslide, only getting 1. A small package gets 2 but Roma is first to his feet. He hits Wright with an elbow to the head and some stomps before having a chat with the referee. For what it’s worth I’m not delighted that the match is going this long either.

Paul Roma rakes at Alex Wright’s face in the corner and snapmares Wright down into a chinlock as we see the crowd in the arena. Paul Roma uses the middle rope for leverage before the referee checks Alex Wright’s arm. That’s enough for Wright to get his second wind. Alex Wright elbows free of the chinlock and connects with right hands. Paul Roma is sent into the ropes but he holds on, Alex Wright eats shit on the dropkick. Paul Roma jumps to the middle rope, climbing to the top for an elbow drop. Paul Roma celebrates before covering and lifts Wright’s shoulder from the mat at 2. Alex Wright is sent into the corner but he moves out of the way of Roma’s charge sending him into the turnbuckles. Alex Wright connects with right hands and European uppercuts. Paul Roma is sent across the ring, Wright  tries a hip toss but ends up shoving Roma down. Paul Roma runs into a spinning kick but kicks out at 1, Alex Wright is sent into the corner but he springs out with a crossbody. Paul Orndorf pulls Wright off the cover even though they’re under the ropes. Paul Orndorf gets on the apron protesting his innocence to the referee as Roma clubs at Wright’s back and slams him in the middle of the ring.

Pretty Wonderful talk amongst themselves and that gives Alex Wright a chance to dropkick Paul Roma from behind and roll him up for the win.

WINNER: ALEX WRIGHT

. This was a lot longer than it needed to be. Paul Roma refused to give Alex Wright anything, Alex Wright tried but he couldn’t get the match on track solo. The fans were really into Alex Wright’s character but that’s the only positive I can give the match. [*] 1/10

Paul Roma was fired shortly after this match for non-co-operation and Alex Wright would become a staple of the WCW under and midcard, so we saw who got the best of the situation.
