CARLITO VS. RANDY ORTON

Randy Orton makes his way out first and hearing “Burning Inside My Light” as his theme makes me feel old. JR reminds us that he became the youngest World Champion in WWE history at Summerslam 2004. Carlito makes his way out and his theme doesn’t last long enough to play him all the way to the ring. His father, Carlos Colon watched him wrestle the previous week at the prestigious Madison Square Garden arena.

Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary for this match. Lillian Garcia is our ring announcer.

CARLITO VS. RANDY ORTON
Unforgiven 2006 (17th September 2006)

They lock up, Orton backs Carlito into the corner and they jockey for position before it’s broken clean. Back to it, again it’s a stalemate and Randy Orton is forced to break.

Carlito spits at Orton after the third collar-elbow tie-up and takes him down, getting a few shots in before Orton scrambles to the arena floor. Back in the ring, Carlito ducks a right hand and lands on his feet from the Asai moonsault attempt dropkicking Orton down. Carlito mocks Orton’s pose but only gets a 2 count because he wasted time (and because he only hit a dropkick so far). Randy Orton pokes Carlito in the eye and clubs him down to the mat for mounted punches for as long as the referee lets him get away with it. More shots in the corner from Orton, but Carlito connects with “Ric Flair-like chops” according to JR. Carlito avoids a scoop slam and hits one of his own, then springboards from the middle rope with a somersault followed by an asai moonsault from the other side for 2. Somewhere in the combination, Orton got hit in the mouth, causing some blood and things only get worse as he’s choked with a boot. Another chop sets Orton up for an irish whip. Randy Orton holds on to the ropes and snaps Carlito’s jaw off the top rope before a dropkick sends Carlito into the security wall but he’s not out there long as Orton brings him back in for consecutive nearfalls.

Randy Orton hits the Garvin Stomps around Carlito, making contact with anything he can and hitting a knee drop for another nearfall. We see a replay of the asai moonsault, where Carlito’s elbow hit Orton in the jaw and busted him open. Randy Orton goes to the reliable chinlock. Carlito works to his feet and breaks free, hitting Orton with a kneelift but running into the powerslam for a nearfall. Carlito waited to the last second to get his shoulder up. Randy Orton goes back to the chinlock and Carlito elbows free when he’s ready. They exchange punches as they’re on their feet, Orton ducks one but Carlito lands on his feet from a back suplex attempt. Randy Orton cuts him off with a kick to the midsection and sends Carlito across the ring. Carlito counters with the springboard back elbow and barely connects with Orton. Carlito clotheslines Orton down and hits another running knee lift to set up a clothesline. The third clothesline puts Orton down for 2 so Carlito takes him to the corner. Randy Orton is sent into the turnbuckles but gets his boot up before walking into the Final Shot for 2. Randy Orton counters an irish whip attempt into a backbreaker and calls for the RKO but Carlito counters that into the Back Cracker (lungblower to modern fans) but the inverted DDT is countered, as is Carlito’s irish whip. Orton runs into Carlito’s boot and the Puerto Rican star goes to the middle rope.

Randy Orton runs into the boot again and Carlito jumps to the top rope and straight into an RKO on the way down! Orton covers 1, 2, 3!

WINNER: RANDY ORTON

This was a pretty decent match for what it was, although they seemed to be going through the motions until the cool finish for a quick pop, so I’ll add some in my score for that. [**] 4.5/10
