TULLY BLANCHARD VS.
RON GARVIN (Taped Fists)
JCP Great American Bash 1986 (5th July 1986)
Tully Blanchard charges and gets backdropped, Ron Garvin knocks him down with right hands and we get some stalling as JJ revives his man.
The match officially starts and Garvin goes to work with
lefts and rights as Blanchard can’t connect with his wild shots but stays on
his feet. Ron Garvin pushes Blanchard against the ropes and another big shot
knocks Blanchard down, the referee starts to count him down but Dillon revives
him from ringside. Tully Blanchard gets in some lefts and right but Garvin
blocks them and keeps peppering the champion, Blanchard blocks his face so
Garvin gets in some bodyshots and Blanchard is down again, he tries to get out
of the ring but Garvin brings him back by the trunks and knocks him down again.
Blanchard is up at 8, he tries to kick Garvin behind the referee’s back but Ron
Garvin catches it, firing off another shot at Tully. The fans count, but go
faster than the referee and Blanchard is up at 7 but winds up out on the apron
on Dream Street. He gets back in the ring and weathers the storm until the end
of the round.
During the 30-second rest period Tully Blanchard charges at Garvin and is knocked out, selling for the entire time. The referee starts the count at the beginning of the second round, which seems strange but Blanchard is on his feet at 8, Ron Garvin connects with a clubbing blow to the back and a headbutt (both illegal moves, so he gets a warning) then knocks Blanchard down with a right hand. Tully Blanchard is on his feet at 5, he uses the corner to stay on his feet and Ron Garvin gets in more punches and headbutts. Tully Blanchard shoves Garvin away before collapsing, he kicks at Garvin and connects for the first time in the match but is knocked down again for 7. Ron Garvin steps over the referee and knocks Blanchard back on his arse. Ron Garvin carries on the onslaught in the corner, Tully tries to tackle him and backdrops Garvin, who keeps a waistlock on as the referee complains that they shouldn’t be wrestling, Garvin bridges up and they fight for position in the backslide as I see Tully is bleeding, I thought he was but didn’t get a good view.
Tully Blanchard flips out of the backslide and is knocked down. The round ends halfway into the count and we begin the rest period. Blanchard is back on his feet at the count of 4 to begin the 3rd round, Tully gets in some shots to the midsection ut gets knocked down. Ron Garvin is getting impatient with the referee and stands over Blanchard raining down punches until he’s dragged away. Tully Blanchard sends Garvin’s shoulder into the ring post and shoves him out of the ring to buy some time. Tully follows to the outside and shoves Garvin into the ring post before getting back in the ring to regroup with J.J. Dillon. Ron Garvin is helped back in the ring by Wahoo McDaniel and Tully Blanchard targets the open cut to close out the round. The referee gets McDaniel out of the ring as Blanchard connects with a boot to Garvin and doesn’t let the referee count him down.
Tully Blanchard slams Garvin and hits an elbow drop, fist drop and knee drop before making the cover, which counts for nothing. Ron Garvin is up at 7 and he knocks Blanchard out of the ring. Tully Blanchard pulls Garvin to the floor but is caught in an atomic drop by Wahoo McDaniel! He staggers into a right hand by Garvin and they get back to the ring. Tully Blanchard is knocked off his feet with one jab, he’s back to his feet at 8 but Ron Garvin knocks him down to end the round. J.J. Dillon retapes Blanchard’s fists but he doesn’t get a chance to use them as Garvin peppers him with shots. Tully Blanchard grabs a headlock out of desperation as he gets to his feet but a back suplex puts a stop to that. They’re both counted down as Blanchard rolls out to the apron, he climbs to the top rope and they both connect with right hands at the same time which leaves them both down for the 10-count.
The ring announcer tells us that the first man back to his feet will win
the match and J.J Dillon tries to wake Tully up with his towel as Wahoo McDaniel
throws a bucket of water over Garvin. Ron Garvin gets to his feet and that
gives him the match.
WINNER: RON GARVIN
Despite the wall of text, there wasn’t much to the match. They were limited by the stipulation to having a boxing match with some “illegal” wrestling moves thrown in to keep the crowd. Boxing fans will enjoy this more than I did, but then they’d probably watch a boxing event instead, anyway. It was a bloody and intense fight, and the crowd was into it, it just became repetitive. [**] 2.75/10
After the match fans chant “I Quit” to Tully and J.J Dillon
threatens to kick out the next person to shout, which riles the crowd up even
more.
