Before the show starts, we get interviews from wrestlers on the card tonight, Danny Doring does most of the talking for his team, saying they have a big future ahead of them with Miss Congeniality (later to be known as Lita). Well, one tag team certainly did.
Joey Styles welcomes us to the show in the middle of the ring
and we go to the intro 6 minutes in. Danny Doring and Roadkill enter first,
with Congeniality. Doring wants to propose and has to use a condom, since no one
thought to bring a ring. The fans are chanting “she’s got herpes” and “she’s a
crackwhore” because original ECW. Doring claims to have had a suite in the
hotel last night as if everyone and their mother doesn’t know Paul Heyman’s
allergic to paying people. Chris Chetti and Nova start making their way down to
the ring, Nova sprints as Chetti takes some time dancing on the walkway.
Joey Styles is
commentary for this match.
DANNY DORING
& ROADKILL VS. NOVA & CHRIS CHETTI
ECW Heatwave 1999 (18th July 1999)
Nova ducks a clothesline and throws a right hand at Doring as we hit 13 minutes into the Pay Per View. He keeps both opponents at bay and hits a sitout belly-to-belly on Doring, sending him out to the walkway.
Nova sends Roadkill across the ring into the turnbuckles as we see Danny Doring knock Chetti down with his own cane. Amish Roadkill reverses an irish whip and lifts Nova for a jumping clothesline from Doring. Danny Doring sends Nova into the corner as Joey Styles talks about how young these guys are, Joey is 28 and Amish unbelievably is 22. He is also sent to squash Nova in the corner by his tag partner. Danny Doring hits the sitout jawbreaker he calls the Bareback and covers for 2. Nova’s face is sent into the top turnbuckle as we see Chetti on the apron now. It almost looks like a standard match as Doring and Nova exchange right hands. Doring hits the G-Spot Sweep (front Russian legsweep) – now I think about it, “Front Russian” sounds like it could fit the same theme somehow for a name. Anyway, Amish Roadkill gets the tag and hits a top rope legdrop, only getting 2. He argues with John Finegan but the 2-count stands. Amish Roadkill sends Nova off the ropes into a delayed sidewalk slam and tags in Doring who hits a springboard (Kidney Drop) elbow for a nearfall. Nova is sent off the ropes again but says “fuck this running” and lands on his feet from a slam attempt, hitting a spinning inverted neckbreaker he calls the Spin Doctor (later known as the CrossRhodes). Both teams make the tag and it’s Chris Chetti that comes in hot. He knocks Roadkill & Doring back with right hands, then takes Amish Roadkill down with an axe kick.
Danny Doring runs into a powerslam and Chetti goes back to the big man. Amish Roadkill switches the momentum and beats Chetti down in the corner, Nova has Danny Doring in a front facelock as Roadkill turns his attention. Nova hits a Stunner on Amish Roadkill and a DDT on Danny Doring! That’s awesome every time I see it. Nova covers both opponents but they kickout, Chris Chetti pairs off with Roadkill and is beaten down in the corner, Roadkill goes to assist Doring and they send Nova into his partner. Nova is able to monkeyflip Chris Chetti into a double clothesline, knocking Doring out of the ring. I can’t do some of the sequences in this match justice. Nova puts Amish Roadkill in the Figure Four leglock as the crowd “Wooo”s and Doring & Chetti both hit top rope legdrops on their opponents. Chetti ducks the haymaker and plants Doring with a Blue Thunder Bomb before going out to the apron to hit a double springboard moonsault. Chris Chetti grabs a microphone and says the move was as pretty as him before asking for music. Miss Congeniality gets in the ring to dance with Chetti, but Nova’s having none of it. The music stops and Miss Congeniality tries to slap Nova, he ducks and Chetti takes the hit. Joey Styles; “He likes it!” Chris Chetti picks Congeniality up for an Amityville Horror “no he doesn’t!” Doring has snuck back in the ring, he whiffs a double clothesline as Nova and Chetti pick a terrible time for their secret handshake.
Danny Doring lifts Nova for a piledriver as Amish Roadkill gets to the top turnbuckle,
Chetti grazes Roadkill with a springboard sidekick as Nova counters into a
Kryptonite Crunch! Chris Chetti hits an Amityville Horror (Michinoku Driver)
and they hit the Tidal Wave (simultaneous leg drop and splash from the same
corner) for the win.
WINNERS: CHRIS CHETTI & NOVA
This was a fine match, the crowd were enjoying it more than me and I’m never going to enjoy matches being halted for dancing segments, it takes me out of it although I can see why it happens. Chris Chetti “didn’t get all of it” more than you like to see in a PPV opener and it could have been a good 5-minute sprint. It was fun for the crowd, but not so much for this reviewer. [**] 2/10
