EARTHQUAKE VS.
GREG VALENTINE
WWF WrestleMania 7 (24th March 1991)
They lock up at the bell and Earthquake backs
Valentine into the corner. He thinks about breaking clean but instead
clotheslines Valentine before picking him up and walking around to hit a powerslam.
Earthquake covers but only gets 2, probably because he celebrated early. Valentine is backed into the corner with a headbutt, he’s sent across the ring
but moves out of Earthquake’s way. Greg Valentine swings the momentum with a
right hand and some chops. Valentine follows with elbows to the top of
Earthquake’s head but can’t shift him with the irish whip. Earthquake shows
Valentine how it’s done but walks into another bionic elbow. Earthquake is down
on one knee as Valentine hammers him with another elbow, but quickly gets back
to a vertical base. Greg Valentine keeps peppering Earthquake with strikes,
including a running clothesline, Greg Valentine hits an elbow drop from the
middle rope and finally takes Earthquake down. Valentine hits a running elbow
drop and the suspicious-looking headbutt to the midsection. Greg Valentine sets
up the Figure Four, but is distracted by Jimmy Hart’s megaphone. He softens
Earthquake’s knee with an elbow drop and goes back to it, but Hart climbs to
the apron and draws Valentine’s attention. Earthquake hits Valentine from
behind, knocking him down for the jumping elbow drop. Earthquake jumps with
excitement and hits the Earthquake Splash for the win.
WINNER: EARTHQUAKE
This was a squash match to build up Earthquake post-Hogan and Greg Valentine was the veteran there to take the fall. It wasn’t a bad match but they simply went through the motions for a few minutes until the finish. [*] 1.5/10
