These two began as friends, Abyss even changed up his look when Mick Foley handed Abyss a flannel shirt of his own. Abyss has saved Mick Foley from the Main Event Mafia, but Foley takes this as an insult, turning on Abyss the previous month.
Before the match, Jeremy Borash is backstage with Mick
Foley, holding a barbie. Barbed wire baseball bat, that is. This was during
the time they had an odd friendship but Foley hasn’t spoken to JB in a while.
Mick Foley says the “good times and laughs” have ruined his reputation. He says
he’s bled on 7 continents and lost an ear, that was to make a reputation for
himself, not someone else like Abyss. Borash asks if Foley is more concerned
with being overshadowed. Mick’s pissed off hearing this and says if Abyss wants
to overshadow him, then he’ll have to do so the hard way. The video package
made Abyss look inferior and humanized him with Foley calling him “Chris.” Then
Abyss got a great line “I’m hardcore, and you just used to be!” he then laid
out the challenge for Monster’s Ball, although I am disappointed they didn’t
incorporate the 24-hour isolation gimmick.
Dr. Stevie Richards makes his way out first, he’s the special
guest referee for this match, Mike Tenay and Tazz handle commentary. Abyss makes hs way out at Tazz makes a Bill Alfonso reference.
MICK FOLEY VS. ABYSS
(Monster’s Ball)
TNA Bound for Glory 2009 (18th October 2009)
Mick Foley jumpstarts the match during Abyss’ entrance and the bell rings. Mick Foley hits Abyss with the barbed wire bat and walks Abyss up the ramp.
Mick Foley connects with right hands and brings Abyss down with a swinging neckbreaker. Mick Foley climbs the lighting rig and Abyss begins to follow him. Mick Foley punches Abyss a bunch of times in the head, firing off unprotected shots until Abyss falls through a suspiciously weak portion of the stage. Mick Foley’s TNA shirt looks quite creepy and I want one. He climbs down to the entrance ramp and uses the barbed wire bat for a Cactus elbow on Abyss. He walks over to ringside and I see a barbed wire board against the corner post. Abyss breaks through the ramp and no one knows how he got under there in the first place. Abyss knocks Foley down with a clothesline and throws a trash can into the ring. He cuts off Foley with a right hand and sends Foley into the ring. A section of the guardrail is brought closer to the ring. Abyss lays the barbed wire board across the ringside area and that should be enough to keep anyone running through the gap. Mick Foley empties the trash can but Abyss hits him in the midsection before he can use it. Abyss bounces it off Foley’s head and disposes of it, he looks around for the next weapon and brings a second barbed wire board into the ring.
Mick Foley fights out of a Chokeslam attempt and drops Abyss on the barbed wire board with the double-arm DDT. Dr. Stevie stands over Abyss and slaps him across the face. Mick Foley forces the barbed wire bat into Abyss’ forehead. Foley swings the bat, hitting Abyss in the arm, and brings one of the boards into the ring. Mick Foley lays in the boots and we see the bloody mess that is Abyss’ forehead. Mick Foley is sent into the barbed wire board in the corner, but untangles himself as Abyss charges and hits the boards. Dr. Stevie helps Foley sandwich Abyss between two barbed wire boards before hitting the running elbow drop. Mick Foley covers but Abyss kicks out at 2. Foley takes a shot at Abyss with a spool of barbed wire and Dr. Stevie hands him a bag. Mick Foley empties the bag with thumbtacks being spread over the mat. Abyss grabs Mick Foley by the throat.
Dr. Stevie reminds him that if Mick Foley lands in the thumbtacks Abyss loses the match. Abyss lets go of Foley and hits Dr. Stevie with the Shock Treatment backbreaker as Daffney runs out to ringside and hands Foley a taser. Tazz still has no idea what it is as Foley creates sparks with Abyss’ midsection and calls for a second referee before covering Abyss. Abyss kicks out at 2 but the referee seemed to hesitate before 3 if I’m honest. Mick Foley pulls out Mr. Socko and grabs the spool of barbed wire but a drop toehold sends him into the board! Abyss covers but Dr. Stevie pulls out the replacement referee and decks him on the floor. Daffney climbs to the top rope, but Abyss grabs her by the throat and sends her through the barbed wire board he set up at ringside earlier! Of course, the camera misses it. Dr. Stevie starts attacking Abyss with right hands but runs into a Blackhole Slam on the thumbtacks. Instantly regretting removing his shirt during the flurry.
Abyss Chokeslams Mick Foley on the barbed wire board and
drags Dr. Stevie over, using his arm to make the 3 count.
WINNER: ABYSS
This was a fun match, with the face/heel alignment the
reverse of what you might expect going in. Mick Foley was the older generation
looking for one last barbaric match, where as Abyss was trying to carve his
legacy and getting to face his inspiration at the same time. It was a fun match
that started hot and didn’t cool down through the 10 minutes. Daffney got one
hell of a moment going through the barbed wire board and even Stevie Richards
looked great becoming a pin cushion. [**¾] 7.75/10
