TEST VS. UNDERTAKER

Before the match Eric Bischoff and Stephanie McMahon are backstage in their shared office. Bischoff says she can watch the Intercontinental Championship on Raw after the victory tonight. (here)

Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary for this match. The Fink is our ring announcer.

We see a video package showing the Un-Americanz disrespecting America, they had an upside down flag which I think is a brilliant touch. Undertaker is the one defending the honor of America in this match.

Test makes his way out holding the flag and wearing a matching shirt. Undertaker enters on his bike and I see a terrible sign reading “Undertaker SummerSlams New York” – yikes. Test bails to the floor as Undertaker gets in the ring, probably the safest place for a while.

TEST VS. UNDERTAKER

WWE SummerSlam 2002 (25th August 2002)

The bell rings as Test gets in the ring, they lock up and Test gets a headlock but is sent into the ropes, he knocks Undertaker down with a shoulder tackle. Undertaker impressively leapfrogs Test and sends him into the corner with a hip toss.

Undertaker wrenches the arm and rams his shoulder into Test, but it’s cut off with a knee to the midsection. Undertaker is sent off the ropes, he ducks a clothesline and hits a jumping variation for a nearfall. Undertaker goes back to the arm wringer and climbs to the top rope, but Test sends the referee into the ropes before he can hit Old School. Undertaker is knocked off the apron by Test who connects with right hands at ringside. Undertaker tries to fight back but is sent into the ring steps. Test breaks the count and gets another shot in on Undertaker before bringing it back into the ring. Undertaker tries to fight from his knees but is kicked again. Test brings Undertaker to his feet and sends him into the top turnbuckle before measuring him up for the back elbows. Test chokes Undertaker with his boot in the corner using most of the 5-count. Undertaker headbutts Test in the midsection, but a knee lift cuts him off. Test sends Undertaker into the corner and follows with a clothesline. He panders to the crowd, Undertaker starts trading shots with Test but is dropped with a short-arm clothesline. Test keeps Undertaker on the mat in an armbar.

Undertaker fights to keep his shoulders off the mat, he sits up and gets to his feet. Undertaker fights back with right hands, Test hits the ropes and Undertaker hits a back suplex after a brief pause. Test rolls out of the way of the elbow drop and they trade right hands again, Test knees Undertaker in the midsection but is caught with a DDT for a nearfall. Undertaker hits Old School and a running clothesline in the corner. Test is sent across the ring, Undertaker hits the Snake Eyes but Test ducks the big boot, kicking Undertaker in the midsection, Undertaker counters a Pumphandle Slam into a goozle but Test elbows his way free. Undertaker ducks the Big Boot and hits the Chokeslam on the second attempt, he covers Test but only gets 2. Undertaker sets up for the Last Ride but Lance Storm runs down to the apron. Undertaker brings him in the ring, Christian slides in after his tag team partner and gets sent into the corner. Undertaker hits a back elbow on Christian and a running clothesline on Storm in the corner. Lance Storm and Christian both take a Chokeslam, but Test is back in the ring. He hits Undertaker with the Big Boot and covers 1, 2, no!

Test gets a chair from ringside, the referee tries to take it from him but Test (not shockingly) overpowers him. Undertaker boots the chair back into Test’s face and hits the Tombstone Piledriver for the win.

WINNER: UNDERTAKER

This was a pretty good match, Test looked good in defeat, even with help from his teammates and it gave America a victory over Canada which they always want. They got their stuff in and no one was hurt. The only nitpick is the back suplex, but it didn’t do enough to effect the match. [**] 4/10

After the match Undertaker takes an American flag from a member of the crowd and celebrates with it in the ring.
