TOMMY DREAMER (C) VS. CHRISTIAN

Tommy Dreamer makes his way out first, and as far as I remember he was the only true ECW Champion the brand had since Rob Van Dam, which is sad if true. Tonight’s event is in Philly so it’s only right he be the one representing ECW tonight. He is followed by Christian, who Striker says is top of ECW’s rankings.

Josh Matthews and Matt Striker are on commentary for this match

(ECW Championship)

WWE Night of Champions 2009 (26th July 2009)

They lock up and Tommy Dreamer is backed into the corner, they break clean but exchange slaps, Striker says you wouldn’t want it any other way in ECW, maybe for Beulah and Francine but not here! Dreamer gets a headlock and is sent off the ropes, he knocks Christian down and covers for 1.

Tommy Dreamer sends Christian to the mat with an arm wringer, but Christian’s there with a receipt. Dreamer sends Christian off the ropes from a headlock, Christian slides under Tommy’s legs and hits a heel kick, covering for 1. Dreamer reverses an irish whip, sending Christian into the corner. He charges as Christian slips outside, Dreamer catches the pendulum kick and hits an overhand chop to Christian’s back before hitting a neckbreaker. He covers and Christian kicks out just before 2. Christian fights out of a back suplex, he slaps Tommy across the face as Striker mentions how many times the ECW title changed hands in Philadelphia, and yeah because the company was based there. In fact, 12 seems small. Christian hits a spinning back elbow from the middle rope and Dreamer rolls to the apron. Christian charges into Dreamer’s shoulder but blocks a suplex. He slaps Dreamer across the face and slides out of the ring before tripping Dreamer, bringing him to the floor. Dreamer is sent into the announce table with a running dropkick through the ropes. Christian eats shit on a springboard crossbody over the corner!

Tommy Dreamer gets back to the apron and hits a running cannonball. He brings it back into the ring and covers for 2 as we see replays. Tommy Dreamer hits a running powerslam for a nearfall and climbs to the middle rope, but Christian makes it to his feet and slaps Dreamer, pulling him to the mat by his ankle. Christian takes Dreamer over with a snapmare and kicks his back, Striker is talking about Dreamer’s neck and spine injuries as Tommy tries to fight back with right hands, he fights off the Killswitch attempt, Christian flips out of a back suplex and jumps on Dreamer’s back with a sleeperhold. Tommy Dreamer drops to his back, breaking the hold. They take a rest as the referee counts, getting up at 3. Christian goes back to the sleeperhold, and Tommy Dreamer sends them both over the top rope to the floor! Yeah, fuck that.

They both return to the ring apron before the count, but Christian goes to the top rope. He jumps into a shot to the midsection and takes a flip bump, Dreamer knocks him down with a clothesline and sends Christian off the ropes into a freefall flapjack for a nearfall. Tommy Dreamer hangs Christian in the Tree of Woe and leads the crowd in an “ECW” chant before hitting the basement dropkick. Tommy Dreamer sets up the DDT but Christian counters, Killswitch is countered too and Dreamer sends Christian into the ropes into a sitout spinebuster. Christian kicks out at 2, Dreamer tries a pumphandle slam but Christian slips out the back and hits the inverted DDT for a nearfall of his own. Christian hits a missile dropkick and goes to the top rope a second time, but Tommy Dreamer catches him in a Texas Cloverleaf. Matt Striker with an all-too-rare Shout out to Dean Malenko whilst Christian tries to fight it off.

Christian crawls through and peppers Dreamer with rights. Tommy Dreamer fights back and catapults Christian into the corner, Christian cuts Tommy off with a mule kick, he springs off the middle rope into a sunset flip and they exchange pin attempts. Christian makes it to the corner, Dreamer charges but is caught with the pendulum kick this time.

Christian hits a missile dropkick from the top rope, he calls for the Killswitch as Tommy Dreamer gets to his feet. Countered by Dreamer into a DDT attempt, no countered back and the Killswitch hits! Christian covers and wins the title.

WINNER: CHRISTIAN (NEW WWECW Champion)

This was an OK match, with some decent moments, but could have had some time shaved from it. They are both veteran workers that can have a decent match in their sleep but I didn’t see much chemistry between them in this match. [¾*] 1/10
