BROCK LESNAR VS. JOHN CENA

Before the match, Matt Striker asks John Laurinaitis what his phone call with Triple H was about and gets told to mind his own business. Michael Cole plugs next month’s Over The Limit event before the hype package. It looks more like the UFC hype packages before the big fights, which is a nice touch that needs to be mentioned. It reminds people of Lesnar’s accolades since high school. He says he’s legitimate and Cena will see that tonight like he did when Lesnar drew blood. Then we cut to the worst month of John Cena’s life, losing to The Rock at WrestleMania and then looking at the lights for Lord Tensai, remember him?

Jerry “The King” Lawler, Michael Cole and Booker T are on commentary for this match. There are dueling “let’s go Cena/Cena Sucks!” chants before Brock’s music even hits. Cole goes through his accolades again before saying Brock’s here to “legitimize” the company, in Lesnar’s words. It’s hard to argue with him, looking back. John Cena makes his way out wearing a thick chain for the first time in years. The cap leaves the ring thanks to Cena tonight, as he throws it to the crowd.

BROCK LESNAR VS. JOHN CENA (Extreme Rules)

WWE Extreme Rules 2012 (29th April 2012)

John Cena charges into a takedown by Brock Lesnar, Lesnar connects with forearms and elbows before Cena is able to throw him off. Lesnar runs Cena down with a clothesline. There’s blood on Lesnar’s chest and I don’t think it’s his own. Charles Robinson tries to check on Cena, but he is sent away. John Cena gets a waistlock takedown on Lesnar and tries to get some shots in, Lesnar turns the advantage and lays in right hands as you can see the cut on Cena’s head. The fans hate the match being stopped for blood, but we get a replay of the start of the match, it seems to be the third elbow that cut Cena. Cena gets to his feet and runs into another takedown, Brock Lesnar with MMA style ground and pound as the referee holds him, since he can’t do much else. Lesnar sends his knee into Cena and shoves him out of the ring. The doctor is back as Cena makes it to the ring, stopping the blood flow for sponsors.

Brock Lesnar charges at Cena and is caught with a back elbow, but he counters an Attitude Adjustment into a german suplex, holding on for another. He stands over Cena and gets some more elbow shots to the cut, but John Cena fights out of the waistlock with elbows. He knocks Lesnar into the referee with a shoulder block, but Brock Lesnar is standing tall with the second collision. Brock Lesnar starts targeting the cut. John Cena makes his way to the corner, but Lesnar cuts him off with a shot to the kidneys before he can grab the chain. Lesnar sends his shoulder into Cena’s ribs before putting him in a standing kimura. John Cena is sent shoulder first into the corner and he rolls out of the ring. Brock goes back to the kimura at ringside before sending Lesnar into the security wall. John Cena is sent back into the ring as we see a replay of the ref bump. Brock Lesnar wraps Cena’s chain around his own fist, then thinks against it. He stomps at Cena and drives his knee into Cena’s midsection. He loosely chains Cena’s feet together in the chain and knocks him down with a clothesline. The referee’s been down for a few minutes now, shouldn’t someone else be out here? Are they all on a break? Lesnar puts Cena on the top rope and a shot to the kidneys leaves him hanging above the apron upside down.

Brock Lesnar gets some more shots in as Cena can’t defend himself and sends his arm into the side of the ring before freeing him and letting Cena drop to the floor at ringside. The referee is still taking a nap, so Lesnar goes to check and it costs him as Cena makes it to his feet, he gets some shots in on Lesnar but the irish whip is reversed sending John Cena into the ring steps. An optimistic fan tells Cena he’s got this as Lesnar puts the referee in the ring using one arm. John Cena slowly crawls into the ring with his chain, but Brock disposes of that. John Cena lifts Lesnar into the Attitude Adjustment but it’s countered into an F-5! If you’re wondering if Charles Robinson was stood in the path, yes. Of course, he was. Brock covers Cena before realizing what happened. Another referee is on their way and Cena is able to kick out at 7 (but officially 2). Brock clotheslines the referee in the least legitimate way. He brings the base of the ring steps into the ring. Cena gets to his feet in the corner but Brock locks in another kimura on the ring steps. Cena struggles both of their weight to a standing position before slamming Lesnar onto the steps. Cena goes to the top rope but misses the leg drop and rolls out of the ring.

Brock Lesnar seems to come to, he looks for John Cena, spotting him making his way back to the ring. Brock Lesnar hits the ropes and uses the steps as a springboard into Cena, Lesnar sends himself over the top to the floor, jeez that was a rough spill. Cole says Lesnar may have gotten the worst of it and I have to agree. Brock Lesnar limps around the ring, shaking the feeling into it before laughing and getting back in the ring. He waits for Cena, who has the chain around his hand. Brock Lesnar waits for Cena and charges again, running into a shot with the chain! Lesnar’s cut too as he makes it to his feet, John Cena finally hits the Attitude Adjustment on the steps and covers Brock Lesnar for the win.

WINNER: JOHN CENA

This is a great match, until the final 15-seconds. Unfortunately, Lesnar had to go through the return look at the lights match before becoming the force he’s known as. That being said,  until that the match was almost perfect. The stopping for blood does take away from the beginning, but they went from slow, to methodical. John Cena shouldn’t have been able to hold his own against Lesnar. [****] 7.5/10

After the match, John Cena cuts another promo saying he wanted people to feel the extreme tonight and he’s pretty banged up but he’s glad to be in Chicago. He addresses the split crowd and tells people to get home safe, he may have to go away for a while. Which of course didn't happen
