BETH PHOENIX (C) VS. MICKIE JAMES

Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary for this match. There's an advertisement for next month's Royal Rumble at Madison Square Garden. Jillian Hall interrupts Lillian Garcia's introductions to this match. She's out to plug her Christmas album. She gives us a live rendition of one of her favourites and it's terrible. Mickie James makes her way out to mercifully put an end to it as JR has to be careful about saying Mickie James has a huge mountain to climb tonight. Beth Phoenix is out, she holds the title above her head during her entrance, which is something I liked but didn't appreciate enough at the time. Lawler plugs tonight's sponsor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 during this time.

They lock up and Beth Phoenix sends the challenger to the floor. They lock up again, Mickie James gets a headlock and springs off the ropes but Phoenix pushes her off. Phoenix knocks James down with a shoulder tackle, James kicks at the leg but can't send Phoenix for an irish whip. Phoenix stands on the challenger's back and pulls her hair around the middle rope. Beth Phoenix with a snapmare into a dragon sleeper. Mickie James gets to her feet and uses knee strikes to try and get out of it but Phoenix cuts her off with a shot to the midsection. Mickie James tries to mount a comeback but is sent into the ropes. Mickie James into a wheelbarrow, but Phoenix has her in a chickenwing.

Mickie James fights her way back to solid ground, she stuns Phoenix with back elbows and drops, hitting an overhead kick to Beth Phoenix. Beth Phoenix shakes it off and goes back to the standing dragon sleeper, she lifts Mickie James but James rolls through and lands on her feet, getting her boot up as Phoenix runs at her in the corner. Beth Phoenix runs into a back elbow, Mickie James connects with the headscissors and hits the Lou Thesz press! It was never appreciated how good her Thesz press was. She hits a spin kick to the midsection and kicks Phoenix in the face before another Lou Thesz press, this time slamming Phoenix's head into the mat. Mickie James hits a running dropkick for a nearfall.James chops Phoenix, she catches the right hand and hits a neckbreaker. Mickie James hits a missile dropkick and covers but Phoenix kicks out at 2. WINNER: BETH PHOENIX

They made the most of their short time. Commentary put Mickie James over as Phoenix's toughest challenger and they both came out of this match looking good, I wanted to see a rematch by the end. The hiccup at the end made the match look slightly more real, as oppose to what I call a “botch” so it didn't harm the match, but I can't rate it too high. – As a match it's *½ but personally I'd rate it 3.25/10
