Four Team Elimination Tag Team Match

Vince McMahon, Good Ol' JR and Mr Perfect on commentary for this match. Lief Cassidy (more commonly known as Al Snow) and Marty Jannetty enter first as the New Rockers. Their gear looks really strange too. The BodyDonnas of Skip and Zip... Yeah really. (Chris Candido and Tom Pritchard respectively) Candido has a neckbrace on because he injured it a couple of nights ago at Madison Square Garden. Perfect doesn't believe it. The final challengers enter and this is the first match of its kind in WWF. Vince gets really excited over the Godwinns' entrance. JR goes through recent victories these teams have traded and Vince agrees the tag team division in the WWF is competitive. The Smoking Gunns finish off the entrances accompanied by Sunny. Sunny's reluctant to let go of the championships as Jim Ross goes over the rules. Once the match starts 2 men are legal, anyone can tag anyone and when one team member takes a fall the team is eliminated, with the last team standing being the champions.

(FATAL FOUR WAY ELIMINATION TAG TEAM MATCH
WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP)
WWF Summerslam (18th August 1996)

Billy Gunn starts with Henry O. Godwinn. Godwinn gets a side headlock but Gunn sends him off the ropes. Henry knocks Billy down with a shoulder block.

They both go for a collar-elbow tie up but Billy sneaks behind. Godwinn grabs the top rope and sends Billy off, knocking him down with a second running shoulder tackle. Billy Gunn regroups with Bart in their corner and kicks Godwinn in the gut, knocking him into the ropes with a right hand. Godwinn reverses an irish whip and sends Billy over with a high hip toss. Billy gets back to his feet but Henry Godwinn knocks him down with right hands. Henry Godwinn hits a wheelbarrow slam, and Gunn rolls out of the ring, which is apparently enough to make Zip legal now? Henry also tags out to Phineus I. Godwinn who locks up with Zip. Godwinn grabs a side headlock and Zip sends him off the ropes. Zip goes prone and is knocked down with a shoulder tackle. The Godwinns have had control of this whole match so far. Sunny gets on the apron because she's Sunny before Zip and Godwinn lock up again. Zip gets a headlock, but Godwinn sends him off the ropes. They crisscross before tagging in both members of the Smokin' Gunns. They make a big deal about The Smokin' Gunns having to make contact or they'll be disqualified and lose the championships. Then Bart Gunn tags back out to Zip without them making contact! In between all that bullshit, The Smokin' Gunns failed at the same tactic against The Godwinns. They were outsmarted by stereotypical Hog Farmers. I need a moment.

Billy Gunn grabs a side headlock on Zip, who looks really badly out of shape. He sends Gunn off the ropes and barely leapfrogs him, proving my point, however a really impressive arm drag immediately after made up for it some. Another arm drag sends Gunn over and Zip knocks him down with a clothesline. Jannetty trips Zip from the outside and Billy hits a falling elbow drop to eliminate the Bodydonnas. Sunny laughs at her husband's misfortune as Vince and JR go over Skip wanting to be a part of the match but his neck brace keeping him on the apron. Henry Godwinn enters the ring to continue the match as Mr Perfect nervously says hello to Sunny. Godwinn has control of Gunn's arm in the ring but Gunn sends him off the ropes and knocks him down. Gunn tags out to Lief Cassidy who takes it to Godwinn, sending him across the ring and knocking him down with a clothesline. Although it knocked Cassidy back too. Cassidy carries on the aggression on the mat before tagging out to Marty Jannetty. They beat down on Godwinn some more and Cassidy gets out before the 5 count. Henry Godwinn reverses an irish whip sending Jannetty into the corner, but Jannetty gets the boot up. He knocks Godwinn down with a clothesline as Vince mentions Jannetty's former Rockers partner is the WWF Champion, Shawn Michaels.

Marty Jannetty is also a former Intercontinental champion in his own right as JR reminds us. He snapmares Godwinn over before hitting a fist drop and tagging out to his partner. Cassidy beats on Godwinn some more, making a quick tag to Billy Gunn. Gunn headbutts Henry Godwinn before choking him on the top rope. Cassidy inadvertently hits Gunn with a cheap shot from the apron! The Smokin' Gunns aren't happy with the partnership being broken like that as the New Rockers try to explain it was an accident. Godwinn takes advantage of the miscommunication sending Gunn off the ropes into a sidewalk slam. Godwinn covers and both members of the New Rockers come in to break it up, but they hit Gunn with elbow drops! The Smokin' Gunns and New Rockers have some words in the ring. The Godwinns knock their heads together and clear house, somehow that leaves Lief Cassidy legal. He's sent off the ropes into a back elbow. Cassidy across the ring again, but he ducks the clothesline grabbing a waistlock. There's a contrived spot with Godwinn going into the corner, Jannetty attacking him and somehow getting flung into the ring. Jannetty falls victim to the Slop Drop eliminating the New Rockers.

Bart Gunn jumps Henry Godwinn, not giving him time to rest and scoops him up, slamming him on the mat. Bart hits a knee drop and kicks at Godwinn in the corner. Godwinn sent into the opposite corner but charges into a boot. Henry Godwinn clotheslines Bart Gunn out of his boots and both men are down. Bart Gunn is the first to make it to his feet and he cuts Henry off from making the tag as Vince mentions Godwinn's been in there a while now. Godwinn starts fighting back from his knees but Bart keeps control and tags out to Billy. Billy Gunn kicks at Henry and talks trash before tagging back out as we see Sunny cheering and see the action over her shoulder. Billy Gunn is slow to get out of the ring, but just avoids disqualification as Henry again starts fighting back. Bart takes him to a neutral corner, keeping him away from his partner and carries on the attack. Henry hits a right hand to the ribs out of the corner and lifts Bart for an inverted atomic drop, making it back to his feet for the first time in a while. Bart limps to tag in Billy though and Billy takes it to Godwinn in the corner. Godwinn is sent across the ring but he catches a running cross body and slams Gunn to the mat! Hillbilly Jim tries to will Godwinn to make the tag and he eventually does. P. Godwinn knocks the Smokin' Gunns down with right hands.

Henry clotheslines himself and Bart over the top out of desperation. Sunny and Hillbilly Jim have the referee distracted as Billy Gunn takes a Slop Drop! Bart Gunn flies off the top with an elbow drop and covers P. Godwinn with Billy's lifeless body. 1, 2, 3!

WINNERS: THE SMOKIN' GUNNS (STILL WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS)

This match is give or take. It's an enjoyable enough to sit through and watch but there isn't a lot to it. Skip was banned to the apron, Zip was out of shape and the New Rockers didn't do a lot besides run around and strike. I'd have preferred a competitive match between the Smokin' Gunns and the Godwinns really. They could have got the same story over with half the pay checks. – WORKRATE: 3/5 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT: 1.75/5 OVERALL: 4.75/10

Sticking with tag team matches, and because the Godwinns actually really impressed me in this match. I shall review their match against the Legion of Doom at Summerslam 1997.
