MARTY SCURLL VS. WILL OSPREAY (RPW HIGH STAKES 2016)

Marty Scurrl VS. Will Ospreay
RPW High Stakes (Saturday 16th January 2016)
York Hall, London, England

This is one pairing I keep hearing about. I saw a match of Ospreay's earlier here. Marty Scurrl currently wrestles in Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, and had a run in (then named) TNA a few years ago, but he's come a long way since then. This match has high stakes (pun probably intended, it wasn't mine.) The winner will be the first Revolution Pro wrestler, and independent to get a figure made of him, and will also become the #1 contender for the Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship.

The Villain” Marty Scurll makes his way to the ring, and the crowd is on their feet. He's a former triple crown champion in RPW and a member of The Revolutionists. Will Ospreay makes his way to the match and he's a former cruiserweight and tag team champion. Fans chant Ospreay in the form of “Ole” as he high fives his way around the ring. Ospreay leaps in the ring and gets ready for the match to start. We get some trash talk before the referee checks for weapons in their respective corners.

The bell rings and the fans are firmly behind Ospreay. Apparently both the action figures have prototypes already, this match simply determines which hits production lines first. A collar-elbow tie up starts, and Scurll backs Ospreay into the corner. Scurll with a playful clean break as we get the run down. Both men evenly matched with Ospreay only having a 2 inch height advantage. Mind games have been a big theme between these two men. They lock up again and Scurll pushes Ospreay back, but Ospreay reverses the pressure near the corner. Ospreay breaks clean and hits a perfect back flip in the centre of the ring before bowing to Scurll. Scurll's pissed off and wrenches in a headlock. He drops to one knee to apply more pressure. Ospreay backs him into the ropes but Scurll knocks him down with a shoulder tackle.

Scurll taunts again and slaps Ospreay. Ospreay goes prone, then leapfrogs Scurrl. Scurll stops running and Ospreay starts, Ospreay jumps up for a headscissors takedown but Scurll catches him. Ospreay rolls through and gets our first nearfall. Both men get to their feet and Scurll knees Ospreay in the gut. Scurll runs off the ropes and jumps for a headscissors takedown but Ospreay cartwheels out! Scurll boots him in the leg and looks to take control of it, but Ospreay bounces around on his good leg and kicks Scurll off. Ospreay runs into a hiptoss but bounces off the top rope and arm drags Scurll down. Ospreay gets a waistlock and rolls Scurll up in an O'Connor roll. Scurll into the chickenwing but Ospreay rolls through! Ospreay lands on his feet on a standing moonsault attempt as Scurll rolls out of the way and gets to his feet. Both men bow and we get a standoff.

Fans love it and Scurll wants a handshake but Ospreay doesn't go for it. They circle and Scurll wants a Grecco-Roman knuckle lock. They lock the first hand but Scurll kicks Ospreay in the gut. Poke to the eye by Scurll sends Ospreay against the ropes. Scurll chops Ospreay on the chest twice. Ospreay fights back with one of his own as the commentators are talking about the jealousy that Scurll would have if Ospreay won this match. Having to see Ospreay's figure held up by fans before his own. Both men work on corroding eachothers' chests with chops before Scurll gets tired of it and pokes Ospreay in the eye again. Scurll sends Ospreay off the ropes, Ospreay handsprings back and hits a headscissors takedown. Ospreay kips up as Scurll gets to his feet and Ospreay dropkicks Scurll back down. Ospreay backs to the corner as The Villain gets to his feet. Ospreay runs into a back drop but lands on his feet Just Kidding Superkick by Scurll spins Ospreay's kneecap around! Ospreay rolls under a clothesline and catches Scurll with a headscissors, Scurll shoves him off and Ospreay's in a handstand. Basement dropkick to Ospreay's JAW! Scurll covers. 1! 2! Scurll picks up Will Ospreay and drops him ribs first across the guardrail. Scurll gets a run up and hits Ospreay with a European uppercut! Ospreay sent flying into the crowd as they chant with the referee counting both men out. Scurll slides in the ring equally to break the count and swear at the referee.

OSPREAY WITH A SOMERSAULT SENTON OFF THE WALKWAY! Ospreay came out of nowhere, and he climbs the guardrail to cheer with the fans. It costs him as Scurll is able to pull Ospreay's ankle and bring him down to the floor. Scurll collapses too and we have a double count on the floor. Ospreay doesn't slide in enough to break the count at 6, Scurll has the same situation at 8 so they both slide in at 9. That's one of the best double count out spots I've seen. The action figure made will be available at rockyztoyz.com and revolutionpro.com. Both men to their feet in the ring and Scurll takes control of Ospreay's left arm. He slams it to the mat twice before stomping Ospreay's ear. Scurll grabs the arm again but Ospreay connects with forearms. Scurll still able to slam Ospreay down, this time with more force before taking a second in the corner. The commentators wonder which stipulation is more important, the #1 contendership, or the action figure. They then wonder if it could just be destroying each other that matters most in this match.

Ospreay tries to get some feeling back in his left arm. Simmons says his shoulder injury was the worst injury he's suffered. Scurll brings Ospreay to his feet but Ospreay rolls him up! Scurll rolls through at 2 and both men are quickly to their feet. Scurll catches Ospreay with a back elbow and gets a nearfall of his own. Scurll locks Ospreays legs up and sticks his hands down his trunks, he wipes it on Ospreay's face in complete disprespect to chants of “you sick fuck” before wiping it on his own face because, I don't know really. He slams Ospreay's knees into the mat and Ospreay rolls to the corner. Scurll quick to drag Ospreay back out and he applies a surfboard, getting more pressure on Ospreay's injured shoulder, as well as his freshly pained knees. Ospreay is rolled around the ring in the surfboard before he releases it. He covers but Ospreay is able to shove him off and get his shoulder up.

Andy Simmons thinks Ospreay relies too much on the top rope and looks at how that will do him in 10 years. Bennet reminds him people like Jushin Liger and Ultimo Dragon were able to stay junior heavyweight wrestlers and change their style to be more grounded. Ospreay still favouring his left arm and shoulder as he gets to one knee in the corner. This is awesome” chants by the crowd and I think that's an understatement. I have no idea how these guys do this. Wow, some of the spots in this match were crazy. These two guys have amazing chemistry and left it all out on the line in this match. This is an Ospreay match I needed to see. I lost how many times I bit on false finishes, having gone into this match blind and really knowing nothing about the feud except that I'd been told to watch it. Both men really impressed me, Marty Scurll does all the small things right for being a heel. He wants people to boo him even though they appreciate his work. He also adds stuff to his repertoire like the finger snap, a move that's painful, but focuses on such a small area it's not used much. Back to the match it was just insane. You need to hunt this out. 2/2 at RPW High Stakes 2016 that I've reviewed. – Rating: 8.6/10

Fans are on their feet applauding what they've just seen. Scurll tells Ospreay to get to his feet and he does so. They shake hands as Ospreay leaves Scurll to have his moment in the ring, taking one final look back before heading backstage.
